Two proton beam therapy (PBT) centres are being developed nationally, one at The Christie and the other at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This hugely prestigious project will be the first Proton Beam Treatment Center in the UK – located at the Christie Hospital Campus, and one of the largest European cancer treatment centres of its kind.
They are both being funded by a £250 million government investment. Interserve was appointed to design and deliver the Manchester PBT centre through a rigorous P21+ procurement process.
The state of the art five storey building will provide:
- Three treatment gantries and a research room
- A patient reception
- Consultation rooms
- Public space
The new facilities will mean that up to 750 patients a year with complex cancers will have the opportunity to benefit from this treatment.
AccentHansen has been chosen to design and supply the Glass Doors and Screens package at the new Christie Proton Beam Therapy Centre in Manchester.
The works will include the supply and installation of GlazeShield Plus door systems and screens. One of the main challenges was the limited access available to move the glass into position, and the design had tobe adjusted to suit.
